Branson is well know for it’s great vacation rentals, but that’s not all.
We also have a famous ball of twine!
Did you know…
Branson is home to a number of interesting sights, and one such sight that attracts visitors year-round is the world’s biggest ball of twine! When you check in to your Branson lodging at one of the resorts, pick up an information leaflet about this unusual attraction. A large draw for many tourists across the United States and Canada, the theme of “The World’s Biggest Thing” is a popular one. In fact, it’s quite common to find people who are doing road trips specifically to see the various “World’s Biggest Things”, and Branson’s Ball of Twine is one of the places they stop.
The Ball of Twine can be found at the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum of various oddities. You might be wondering how this ball of twine came into existence. Back in the late 1980’s, a Texan brick mason by the name of JC Payne used to roll up extra baling twine from his hay bales into a ball to keep his cows from eating it (they sure did love eating some twine!). When this had gone on for a while and the ball was gaining weight and height quickly, one of his children showed him a newspaper review about a book which mentioned the World’s Biggest Ball of Twine, which was located at that time in Minnesota.
Size of a VW Beetle!
Inspired to beat the title-holder, Payne had a new spark of ingenuity and started collecting bits of twine where ever he could lay his hands on it. It took over four years of scraping up any spare bits of twine from around his farm and from neighboring farms, but eventually he had enough to have it certified by the Guinness Book of World Records in 1993, after which he eventually sold it to Ripley’s, who took it to their Branson branch.
While the ball has its competitors in Kansas, Minnesota and Wisconsin, the Branson ball is the only one to have been verified by Guinness as the “World’s Biggest”. The other balls may be heavier or taller, but this one is the only one that has the height along with the weight! So, if you’re looking for something fun and quirky to do while you’re visiting Branson, this is the place for you. Easily accessible from all Branson vacation rentals, this is a must see on any visitors list, and the rest of the amazing displays at Ripley’s museum are worth a look too!
