If you happen to be in Branson this February, you’re in for a special treat that won’t be around again for nearly another year. It is one of the best months to go eagle watching, and see our National Symbol in person! Lake Taneycomo in Branson Missouri is one of the best places to see Bald Eagles nationwide. Winter time is optimal for catching sight of these majestic animals, who were once on the endangered species list and facing extinction.
First a bit of information on how to see these birds of prey aka raptors: Just south of Branson, on lake Taneycomo there is a big trout hatchery called “Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery” and that is where you want to go. You take the 165 southwest and you should see signs for the hatchery near Table Rock Dam. You can, in fact, try your hand at catching sight of a Bald Eagle anywhere around Taneycomo. But your best bet is to go to the hatchery. They have viewing decks and blinds as well. For a full list of Missouri eagle watching locations, visit the Missouri Department of Conservation’s eagle page.
When you plan an outing to see the Bald Eagles, be sure to dress warm and bring binoculars, and maybe even a camera if you have one handy. Get there early and you’re sure to see some eagles this time of year. They are spectacular animals with huge wingspans, and are truly a sight to see when you are in Branson.
